TRAINING NEWS

NEW INSTALLATION ACCREDITATION TO BENEFIT VEHICLE USERS
Nationally recognised accreditation for installation technicians is set to become a reality.

The Mobile Electronics and Security Federation announces that work on Automotive Technician Accreditation for installers of audio, security, communications and similar equipment is set begin on April 21 2008, as part of The Institute of the Motor Industry’s ATA programme for motor industry technicians.
Although already offering installation technicians a full range of industry specific qualifications and training for many years as an IMI Approved Centre, the MESF saw that to gain full motor industry acceptance of the aftermarket sector that installs audio, security, communications and similar equipment to motor vehicles, a dedicated ATA would be needed.

The MESF successfully presented to the IMI evidence of market size, worker numbers, complexity of work undertaken and industry sector support before gaining approval for development of its own ATA to begin.
A Working Group of industry experts comprising installation technicians, business owners and representatives from industry organisations is being assembled to steer the development of the ATA.

If any readers with an interest in the installation of aftermarket electronic, electrical and security devices would like to join the working group or be kept up to date with developments please contact the MESF.
MESF General Secretary, Jeff Marshall MIMI says,
“Our industry sector has for too long been the poor relation of the motor industry. As independent retailers and installers we have suffered from the negative attitude of the motor manufacturers and their dealer networks to equipment not included as standard on their vehicles. In reality our installation technicians are exceptionally skilled; they treat as normal the successful and safe integration of complex electronic devices into equally complex motor vehicles many years before the motor manufacturers list the devices as options or standard equipment.
By having the same accreditation for technicians through the IMI and ATA, our industry sector will have the status it deserves as a significant part of the motor industry.
Vehicle owners, fleet operators and other vehicle users will have the confidence to use the independent aftermarket and ignore any more negative statements from the motor manufacturers and their dealer networks.”

‘STING’ CHANGES HANDS
Locks4Vans Ltd, is now the UK’s largest independent supplementary lock provider for vans and other commercial vehicles, since adding ‘sting’ to its products by acquiring the mechanical locking division of Scorpion Automotive Ltd.

Appreciating the need to continually develop product and introduce technical advances for increasingly complex new vehicles, Scorpion Automotive Ltd sees Locks4Vans Ltd as being best placed to undertake that task for mechanical locking. This move allows Scorpion to devote resources to its core business areas.

Locks4Vans Ltd Managing Director, Chris Batterbee MIMI is no stranger to the Scorpion lock range as he set up their Lock Division and developed the products in the mid-to-late 1990s. He welcomes the addition of Scorpion to the Locks4Vans offering as a major benefit to the trade now that product and service for the two highest quality ranges of after-fit locks are available from a single dedicated source.
Locks4Vans designs, manufactures and distributes supplementary locking systems to the trade only. An ISO 9001-2 registered Company, Locks4Vans Ltd is a Corporate Sponsor of the Mobile Electronic and Security Federation, a member of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and an affiliate of the Master Locksmiths Association.
Based in Gravesend Kent, Locks4Vans has an internal staff of eight plus two external sales managers (North & South). Additional internal staff will further strengthen the Design/Development and Customer Service teams for the extended product range which adds the familiar and popular Scorpion Kaba-Grundmann locks and the BodyGuard shutter security systems to their own T and S Series products. Scorpion B Series keys will now be cut and supplied for the next working day on Locks4Vans computer controlled key machines, using original manufacturers’ blanks.

CAR MAKERS PLAN TO KILL CD PLAYERS BY 2012

In another example of car makers taking away car owners freedom of choice and further restricting the aftermarket, at the Auto Interiors Show in Detroit a leading dashboard electronics developer stated that as early as 2012 the CD player will disappear from car interiors.

Despite the solid millions of CDs owned and played in car by drivers, the car makers intend to force us into buying and using the music storage devices they wish to promote. Gone will be the universality of knowing you can have your favourite music playing in any CD player equipped vehicle. Instead there will be a variety of incompatible technologies varying by car maker dependent on which ever player manufacturer they happened to have done a deal with for a particular car. Options and upgrades will be limited to whatever is compatible with the car and its existing equipment. Even worse, there will be no dashboard space for an owner to install the entertainment equipment of their choice. In a backward step harking back to the days before even DIN slots with blanking plates were dashboard features, audio and navigation head units will become add-ons not add-ins. The car makers plan to provide electrical sockets for drivers to connect music players, phones and laptops. This will inevitably increase distractions for drivers and provide an unsightly and hazardous clutter of wiring and portable devices around the driver. Not a good idea.

Even if the car makers want to save a few pounds of production costs or earn a few pence in licensing fees on the vehicles they sell they should not impose a proprietary music device on their customers or deny them the opportunity to fit what they want, safely and securely, in the dashboard as before.

The car owner must be free to choose to keep up with the latest technologies if they want but also to keep the tried and tested for as long as they want as well.

Support the Mobile Electronics and Security Federation in ensuring the future of the vehicle aftermarket and upholding the principle of customer choice.
